WE 
GOP RESISTERS REFUSING TO GUT EPA
What happens when 45 appoints an EPA administrator whose goal is to decimate his agency, rather than support its mission? The Congressional Appropriations committee resists. “I can assure you, you’ll be the first EPA administrator who has come before this committee in eight years that gets more money than you’ve asked for,” Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) told the head of EPA, Scott Pruitt, when he defended a 30% budget cut for his own agency.
WETEACHING TOLERANCE TO HOMOPHOBIC RACISTS
It’s hard to find much hope in the shooting that occurred at last week’s Congressional baseball practice, which seriously injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), and landed others in the hospital with less serious injuries. But we did. Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, who helped take down the gunman, is credited with preventing an all-out massacre. Griner is a gay black woman. Congressman Scalise, the author of Louisiana’s ban on same-sex marriage, is known as one of the most anti-LGBTQ politicians in Washington. He has also been a speaker at an international conference of white supremacists. Here’s to hoping that Scalise’s recovery will include a conversation with Griner and her wife.

The press was banned from filming Turnball at the event, but the prime minister’s impersonation of 45 boasting of his popularity in the non-fake polls was just too good not to film… and leak.
WE U.S. FOREIGN SERVICE RESISTERS
Career diplomats in the U.S. Foreign Service are resisting 45 by publicly denouncing his policies, refusing to implement them, and at times, quitting. It’s an unusual situation for these State Department employees, who pride themselves on being nonpartisan. The most recent defection is the chargé d’affaires at the American Embassy in Beijing, David H. Rank, who said he could not support 45’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.
WE THE SUPREME COURT FOR TAKING ON GERRYMANDERING
Technology has made it easier than ever for the GOP to create districts that dilute the votes of Democrats, and win House seats. In 2011, a Wisconsin court found that the state’s plan for Congressional redistricting was unconstitutional, due to GOP gerrymandering. The Republican-dominated state appealed the ruling. Now the case is going to the Supreme Court. “For too long, the important task of redistricting has resembled a back-alley brawl: no rules, no referees, and no holds barred,” said Dan Vicuña of Common Cause. A Supreme Court ruling will thrust gerrymandering into the spotlight, and finally create some rules.

Quick! See how many names you can rattle off without looking. The usual suspects are there, but others may be new to you. Before ascending to the presidency, 45 had a reputation for throwing his associates under the bus. The list of people in his inner circle who’ve been scrambling to hire lawyers suggests little has changed. The only certainty? The list will undoubtedly grow.
WE THE WNBA-PLANNED PARENTHOOD PARTNERSHIP
Increasingly frustrated by political attacks against Planned Parenthood, the Seattle Storm, a WNBA team owned, coached, and managed by women, decided to join the fight for women’s reproductive rights. The Storm approached Planned Parenthood after the November election, asking how they could help staunch efforts to defund the organization. Storm owner Dawn Trudeau said she’s very aware of potential blowback — but that it was time to step up and fight against Congress’s attack on health care for women and girls.
